When Nicholas Alexander Painting joined the high-profile
restoration of Victoria’s iconic Fairmont Empress, they faced a
critical preservation dilemma. The project required replicating
a large volume of deteriorated, intricate plaster architectural
profiles—including decorative shields, ornate acanthus leaves,
complex centerpieces, and extensive runs of repeating flower
trims.
Traditional manual plaster casting was simply too slow and
labor-intensive to meet the ticking clock. With the project
already running behind schedule, the team needed an immediate
turnaround, but on a landmark site of this caliber, sacrificing
historical quality or visual fidelity was out of the question.
Morin 3D stepped in with a digital workflow to bridge the gap
between speed and heritage quality. We began by 3D scanning the
surviving physical plaster pieces directly in place, capturing
the exact contours, aging characteristics, and artistic nuances
of the original 19th-century craftsmanship. Securing these
high-resolution digital twins immediately protected the fragile
historical assets from any further damage during ongoing
construction.
Next, we converted the scans into production-ready digital
models and 3D printed the replacement pieces using premium PETG,
guaranteeing exceptional long-term stability and structural
durability. Once the printed components were delivered, the
expert finishers at Nicholas Alexander Painting seamlessly took
over, painting and detailing the pieces to match the original
historic colors and finishes perfectly.
By blending advanced additive manufacturing with expert craftsmanship, the collaboration completely erased the schedule deficit without a single compromise on quality. The 3D-printed PETG replicas integrated flawlessly into the Empress's historic fabric, offering identical visual fidelity with far greater durability and impact resistance than traditional plaster. Morin 3D’s rapid digital intervention successfully rescued the project timeline, eliminated the labor bottlenecks of traditional casting, and left the client with a permanent digital archive of the building's historic assets for future preservation.
